I was reading Dio and there are passages describing some of the talented Roman generals during the Principate and Early Empire; I noticed that almost always they would opt for negotiation rather than battle, even though the enemy was clearly intimidated and they had the upper hand. I am talking about for example Corbulo or Vindex. You can see they estimate, correctly, that a superior force and a cowed enemy are the perfect opportunity to gain an ally on favorable terms and spare their own troops.

I'm sorry for you, sir, but Bulgarians have never lived inside the Carpathian Basin. The Bulgarians occupied the territory outside the Carpathian Mountains (Moldova and Wallachia) and large parts of Banat, Vojvodina and the Tisza plain - never in Transylvania between mountains. The Bulgarians temporarily occupied these territories, they did not administer them and they did not have an imperial administration in these territories. Bulgarians used them as territories for plunder, slavery, gold and agricultural products. The Bulgarians organized a state just south of the Danube - never north of it. Other than that, Bulgarians were insufficient to occupy such a large territory as you present in the video. The Bulgarians occupied the territories inhabited by the Wallachians (Romanians) and used them in their wars. Besides, Bulgarians have long oscillated between adopting Eastern (Byzantine - Greek) and West (Latin - Roman) Christianity.

I'm sorry, Renata, but you don't know history. I quote: "Gelou is a figure in the Gesta Hungarorum (Latin for The Deeds of the Hungarians), a medieval work written by an author known as "Anonymus" probably at the end of the 12th century (about 300 years after the Hungarian conquest, which began in 895-896). Gelou is described as "a certain Vlach" (quidam Blacus) and a leader of the Vlachs and Slavs in Transylvania. He was said to be defeated by one of the seven Hungarian dukes, Töhötöm (Tuhutum in the original Latin, also known as Tétény)." Gelou - quidam blacus, Renata ! If you know the Latin, you could read !

Mr. Bogdan Haralampiev, choose: either you don't know the history, or the translation is very wrong. Maybe they are both valid in your case. The voivodes of Vlachs from Wallachia and Moldova were never vassals of the Bulgarian state, they were vassals of the Magyar kingdom, at least until the conquest by the Ottoman empire. The founder of the state of Walachia, Bassarab, was a cuman chieftain and the founder of the state of Moldova, Bogdan I, was a voivod of Maramures, who fled from King Carol Robert de Anjou, the Magyar king. So - Bulgarians have never had vassals north of the Danube river. At the date of establishment of the Vlach states (Wallachia and Moldova) the Bulgarian state no longer exists. The Bulgarian state was founded again after the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878. By the way, congratulations on your name - Bogdan. This is a very old name in Wallachia and Moldova. It has Slavic and Jewish roots: bog + dan.

I'm sorry, sir, for the convenience of that, they teach you, but the Vlach voivods to one are Bulgarian vassals, write and speak Bulgarian, and are native-born. Wallachia and Moldova were an integral part of the Bulgarian state until the fall of Ottoman rule.

Ehem....realistically there is only one source that claims bulgarians were turkic people. And that is a relatively late source. Up to 1000 AD bulgarians are either associated with Getae, Scythians, Goths, Misians or even as descendants of Acheans. Also the Sclaveni were assumed to be part of the Getae. The "roman citizens" , were the thracians. Considering that the above mentioned tribes were also associated with the large thracian diaspora. We can conclude that the Sclaveni were thracian by origin.Old Bulgarians were thracian by origin. So Bulgaria was a formation of free thracians and thracians under roman rule.

Hi, watched the whole thing , very very nice ! Great one ! One correction if I may though , people make that mistake very often , especially foreigners (no offence!) ... Slavs , this is a very controversial word, people give that nickname too much often to too many nations... many of which in fact do not have anything to do with each other... Bulgarians do not have anything to do with Slavs , never had , never will. Bulgarians were very different to the rest of the surrounding tribes or kingdoms. What I am trying to say is that Slavs as a term is myth created by crazy people. All of these tribes or kingdoms had / still have names , call them by their names ... f*ck the Slav word , its fake and it always has been! Respect and love to all , no offence please!

An interesting fact following this battle. Leo V is the new emperror and when Krum appeared at the gates of Constantinople a meeting was set to discuss the peace terms. Leo asked Krum to come himself with only a few men unarmed and gaved him his Emperror's word that their safety was garanteed. Then the night before the meeting he secretly dispathed 3 assassins in the vicinity of where the meeting was to take place. On the next day Krum came to the meeting with his logothetes, his brother-in-law and his son. He started talking with Leo V but at some point he noticed that Hexabilius (one of Leo's men) covered his face with his hand in a suspicious manner and realized this was an ambush. Luckily, his horse was at hand so he quickly mounted helped by his men and rode off before the assassins' arrows could get to him. They managed to kill the logothetes and capture the other two. This treachery, which by the way was not uncommon practice for the Byzantine rulers, infuriated Krum even more. And, when on the following year Krum was busy dealing with the franks and the avars in the west, Leo V invaded Thrace and won a small battle at Mesembria. Krum then decided to deliver the final blow and sack Constantinople. He gathered an army including avars and slavs from the west and began preparation for siege( building siege equipment, etc.). At that point, in the heat of his preparation, on the fifth day after Easter, Krum suddenly died (blood came out of his ears, nose and mouth). This was the end of this great ruler but not the end of Bizantine- Bulgarian wars. The culmination happend 100 years later in 917 at the battle of Achelou river (or the battle of Anchialus) - one of the biggest and bloodiest battles of Middle Ages. Krum was also known for his legislation. His famous Krum's laws are a whole different toppic outside of the scope of this one. Let's just say that they reflect the old Getae's customs.
